Counter-UAV Case Study

Overview

A large private estate in a remote area of Scotland required a reliable way to detect and manage unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) threats. The site is isolated and frequently accessed by helicopter, which elevates both security and aviation safety concerns.

Before deploying a counter-UAV capability, the estate had no practical control over drone activity: no real-time visibility, no pilot location intelligence, and no dependable evidence trail. Comms-Spec delivered a rapidly deployable solution that provides immediate detection, visual confirmation, and a clear operational workflow for on-site response.

The challenge: UAV threats with no visibility or control

UAVs introduce a unique threat profile for high-value locations. They can appear quickly, operate at range, and gather intelligence without being noticed. For remote sites, this risk increases—connectivity is limited, and response windows are short.

The client’s concerns were clear: drones could be used for physical attack, surveillance and attack planning, privacy intrusion (including paparazzi or coercion/blackmail risks), or as a direct hazard to helicopter operations by entering flight paths intentionally or accidentally.

Without specialist detection in place, the team’s ability to respond relied on chance sightings and hindsight—often after a drone had already captured information or left the area.

Introducing a counter-UAV solution

To move from “no visibility” to real control, a counter-UAV solution needs to provide early detection, rapid confirmation, and usable intelligence for an on-site response. In practice, this is achieved through a compact, integrated equipment package that can be positioned to monitor wide areas continuously.

A typical deployment combines an RF detection sensor with an intelligent optics package. The RF layer detects drone activity and helps determine where it’s coming from, while the optics layer supports fast visual confirmation and evidential recording in low light or at a distance. Built for outdoor environments, these systems are weatherproof and straightforward to deploy without major works—delivering persistent, 24/7 situational awareness so threats can be assessed and acted on in real time.

The Comms-Spec solution

Comms-Spec deployed the SkyControl UAV detection system with an AI optics package, supported by a 24/7 tandem monitoring team and direct two-way radio communications with the on-site close protection team.
Rapid, Remote-Ready Deployment
The sensor system was mounted discretely on a tripod at an elevated position and configured for remote operations using standard UK mains power and resilient satellite connectivity. All components were weatherproof, and the optics package included night vision/thermal capability for continuous coverage.
Instant Alerts, Actionable Intelligence
When a drone is detected, SkyControl provides immediate alerting with intelligence designed for action: it identifies UAV activity, supports location awareness of the controller/pilot, and uses RF analysis across a broad frequency range to distinguish genuine threats from background signals. The AI optics package enables fast visual confirmation and evidential recording—supporting both real-time response and post-event review.

Detection Event 4: suspected surveillance behaviour

A controller was detected operating in a position directly opposite the estate. The security team was dispatched to the pilot location and arrived within 14 minutes. On attendance, suspicious supporting indicators were observed, and evidential imagery was captured via the optics package—creating actionable intelligence that would not have existed without the system.

Detection Event 6: GPS spoofing attempt

A UAV using GPS spoofing was detected, showing impossible GPS positions intended to conceal the drone and operator. Despite the attempted deception, SkyControl’s RF signature intelligence still enabled identification and threat assessment. While the pilot was not located, the operator landed the drone shortly after security presence was established—strongly indicating deterrence and effective neutralisation.

Detection Event 18: possible paparazzi / targeted surveillance

A drone was detected flying for an extended period less than 1km from the estate, from a position suitable for observation of multiple properties and security locations. The system recorded the flight behaviour and device identifiers, enabling correlation with any future media appearance and supporting repeat-offender alerts if the same device becomes active again.

Results: measurable risk reduction in the first two months

Over a two-month period, the system recorded 40+ immediate threats. Each detection was relayed instantly to on-site security, enabling rapid dispatch to the most relevant location and preventing threats from reaching the estate.

Every event was automatically logged, creating a reliable evidence trail—including controller location intelligence, UAV flight behaviour, and device identifiers such as model and serial number. This supports repeat-offender monitoring and strengthens protective protocols over time.

The system also recorded UAV activity at illegal altitudes, within a wider helicopter operating environment—highlighting the aviation safety value of continuous, objective detection.

Need control over UAV threats at your site?

If your site is high-profile, remote, or operationally sensitive, UAVs create a risk you can’t manage with standard perimeter measures alone. Without dedicated detection, drones can operate nearby with little warning—leaving teams reactive, with limited visibility and no reliable evidence trail.

Comms-Spec helps you move from uncertainty to control with counter-UAV deployments designed for real-world conditions: rapid setup, discreet hardware, resilient connectivity, and a clear operational workflow that supports immediate action.
